Hello,

We will begin this week talking about the exhibition “Els Moncada to Montcada” (The Moncada in Montcada) whose inauguration took place on May 12 at the Museu Municipal or Casa de la Vila, where BUO Estudio had the privilege of designing the exhibition panels that are displayed together with the pieces donated by Dr. Danilo di Moncada Zarbo Soria.

The exhibition is made up of seven areas that explain the origin of the town and the history of one of the most influential families in medieval Catalonia. It will be opened until next June 6th.

HOLLY OR ILEX AQUIFOLIUM IN BUOPHILIA

With the arrival of the New Year, from BUO Estudio we continued with the description of all plant species that are part of our project BUOfilia. This time we will talk about the Ilex aquifolium, better known as holly or acivo (in Galician).

Holly belongs to the family of Aquifoliaceae, being a species from West Asia, North Africa and Southern and Western Europe.

Regarding its etymology, its name comes from the Latin Ilex (by the resemblance to the leaves of Quercus ilex or oak) and aquifolium adjective that highlights the characteristics and qualities of the thorny edge of its leaves (acus = needle and folius = leaf).

Myths and legends about the holly

According to the Celtic myth, there were two kings and twin brothers named Oak and Holly, who during the entrance of each solstice fought each other alternating power. The first exercised its mandate over the summer (being its period of greatest botanical splendor), whose influence would wane with the gradual loss of their leaves and with the onset of winter, a time when the reign King Holly began by the presence its bright green leaves and deep red of its berries.

The Celts used holly, ivy and mistletoe to decorate their homes during the winter solstice in order to bring luck and prosperity. Its use as a Christmas plant is attributed to the Catholic Church with the idea of replacing it with mistletoe, pagan species widely used by the Druids, being very popular in several English poetic songs and Christmas carols like “The Holly and the Ivy”.

Nowadays, it is a protected species in Galicia and in the rest of Spain species.

With this little post, we wanted to share “our Galician world” and what a best moment to do it with such a representative plant of Galicia’s winter.

Regards and happy 2016!

DESIGNING THE NEW FAÇADE OF SAL Y LAUREL

Hello,

Good morning! We started our week visiting the facilities of Carpintería Metalma at Salvaterra do Miño. It was a very interesting visit as we have learned all the technical characteristics of the wood that we will employ at the façade of the Fish Market.

Thanks to a specialized support team, we have come to the conclusion which wood best suits the project in order to manufacture and assemble the new façade. We have finally chosen two woods: iroko and cerejeira. Both match perfect due to their density, color and durability.

We are happy to continue working with this great project and we wish you a Merry Christmas!

Best regards from BUO Arquitectura!

CHOOSING PAVEMENTS FOR THE FISH MARKET

Hello,

Last Friday we visited the facilities of the enterprise Prosistemas at the industrial zone As Gándaras de Budiño en Porriño. We have learned from a specialized team the diversity and different techniques used for the manufacture of industrial pavements, both from cement and polymer. This has helped us to define the perfect pavement required for the Fish Market.

The main idea is to design a pavement that perfectly combines aesthetical and functional characteristics, fulfilling all the requirements established by the Technical Code for Construction, as resistance and non-skid properties regards.

We are very pleased to work in the development of this pavement. We are very thankful to have the support of both, the clients and the specialists.

Have a nice week and best regards from BUO Arquitectura!

TRIP TO ITALY BY ECLISSE

Hello,

I feel very lucky because I had the opportunity to visit last week the factory “Eclisse, frames for sliding doors” at Pieve di Soglio in the province of Treviso, northern Italy. With a group of architects and the commercial manager of Galicia, Jaime Da Silva, we have traveled to the province in order to deeply learn about all the qualities of their products and to be able to confirm their slogan: “Our products not only optimize the living space, but also increase the multiple possibilities of interior design by reinterpreting the concept of subdivision and the use of domestic atmospheres.”

I would like to thank the invitation and the opportunity that I had. This experience allowed me to learn more about the manufacture of such amazing products. Special thanks to Jaime Da Silva and Eclisse Italy for such an incredible trip.

Thank you very much and it has been a pleasure to meet all my fellow travelers.

SAL Y LAUREL, A NEW CONCEPT OF FISH MARKET

Hello,

We would like to share with you one of the most recent and passionate work that has arrived to BUO Arquitectura: The integral remodeling of a ground floor commercial space for a Fish Market in Nigrán.

We are working together with Sal y Laurel, and we are so happy that we have “put on our boots” and try to understand all the needs that such an amazing and complex space has, as a Fish Market does.

We hope that the result of the project would show in a clear and simple way what the products of Sal y Laurel represent: freshness, quality and Galician identity.

Best regards from BUO Arquitectura!
